Elementary and Secondary Atlanta Schools
The Atlanta Public School System consists of 105 schools, encompassing roughly 50,000 students. This includes 58 elementary schools, 16 middle schools and 20 high schools as well as 7 charter schools, 2 alternative schools and 2 single-sex academies. There is also an adult learning center. All public Atlanta schools follow one of twelve Comprehensive School Reform programs. The CSR programs were established as part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 to offer incentives to schools for providing significant reforms in order to improve the educational experience of the students. One of the high schools that is well known in Atlanta is the New Schools at Carver, which is actually a group of specialized high schools including Early College, designed to prepare students for college, either at one of the fine undergraduate Atlanta schools or elsewhere, the School of the Performing Arts, designed to foster artistic endeavors, the School of Technology, which includes computer instruction, and the School of Entrepreneurship, for those interested in pursuing a business career.
Undergraduate and Graduate Atlanta Schools
When people think of cities with big groups of colleges, usually places like Boston, Ann Arbor or New York come to mind. In fact, Atlanta has over 30 colleges and universities, and some Atlanta schools are ranked among the best of the nation. Some of the best known Atlanta schools include the Georgia Institute of Technology, better known as Georgia Tech, Georgia State University and Emory University. Georgia Tech is considered one of the premier research universities in the country, and is also famous for its sports teams, the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets, which have an intense rivalry with their state neighbors, the Bulldogs of the University of Georgia. Georgia State University is another research university with a long history, and the second largest school in the University System of Georgia. Emory, a smaller school, is ranked 17th in the country among undergraduate programs.
Atlanta is also well known for its historic and prestigious black colleges and universities, which include Morehouse College, the alma mater of such luminaries as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Spike Lee and Samuel L. Jackson, Spelman College, the oldest historically black college for women in the United States and Clark Atlanta University, which in 2008 was ranked in the top 25 of historically black colleges and universities by US News & World Report.
